Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C.—McDaniel College got an early jump to overthrow the Marymount (Va.) University baseball team on Wednesday afternoon. In the non-conference matchup, the Saints fell, 8-1, to the Green Terror at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.
Sophomore Kaden Darrow started on the mound for Marymount, striking out two batters and leaving one on base to finish the top of the first inning. In the second, the Green Terror struck first knocking in four runs. Freshman Patrick Berthelette relieved Darrow at the mound, completing one third of an inning before junior John LaMotta took over on the mound to finish the inning. In the bottom of the second junior Brandon Savage and freshman Nick Smutko put together back-to-back singles up the middle, but were left stranded on base, as the bottom of the second came to a close.
The scoring went silent until the Saints answered in the bottom of the fifth. Smutko started the inning with a single up the middle. Junior Roy Coates reached first on a fielder's choice, and followed up with a stolen base, and advanced to third after a poor throw by the catcher. Junior Lorenzo Calderon was able to score Coates on a RBI single up the middle. Calderon got caught stealing second to end the inning.
The top of the eighth saw McDaniel rack up four more runs. The first run of the inning came after a sacrifice fly to center field befor a three RBI double to left field pushed the Green Terror's advantage to 8-1.
Marymount will head to Winter Haven, Florida for a six-game stint over spring break. Playing at Lake Myrtle Park, the Saints will open with a twin bill against Mount Union on Saturday, March 5. Game one is set for 1 p.m.
