Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – A late-innings' push by No. 16 Shenandoah University pushed it past the Marymount (Va.) University baseball team on Tuesday afternoon, 17-8, in a non-conference matchup at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy in the nation's capital.
Sophomore Sean O'Connell took the mound for the Saints, leaving one on base in the top of the first before Marymount brought the first run of the day across the plate in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Brandon Savage, with the bases loaded, brought home freshman Luke Tyree with a shot to center field.
The Hornets put two runs on the scoreboard in the third inning to take a 2-1 advantage, but junior Brandon Orbe answered with his first of two homeruns for the game to open up the bottom half of the third to draw the score up at 2-2.
The fourth inning saw more scoring for the blue and white, as Orbe reached first on an error by the third baseman, which advanced sophomore Stephen Berczek home.
The top of the fifth saw Shenandoah draw the score even again with a RBI single to left center but the Saints had no issue firing back in the bottom half with three more runs off a RBI single to left field by junior Lorenzo Calderon followed by a two-run bomb by Berczek to push a 6-3 advantage.
The next inning, the Saints reached their largest lead of the contest as Orbe launched another shot over the left-field fence to move the score to 7-3.
Over the next three innings, the Hornets began to heat up, bringing across 14 runs to take a 17-7 lead into the final three outs for Marymount in the bottom of the ninth. Freshman Derek Chouinard tacked on one more run for the Saints in the inning with a deep shot to the fence in right center, bringing around freshman Cal Berman for the RBI double.
The Saints are back in action on Wednesday, March 2 at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, as they host McDaniel College for another non-conference tilt. First pitch is set for 12:45 p.m.
