Box Score Fredericksburg, Va. – The Marymount baseball team dropped a 12-7 decision to long-time foe Mary Washington in the CAC First Round on Wednesday afternoon. As the #4 seed, the Saints will now face #1 Frostburg State at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. With the tournament format featuring double-elimination, Marymount must defeat FSU – a team which it has beaten twice this season – in order to advance.
Lorenzo Calderon and Ben Berczek each recorded three hits in the effort, with Calderon notching two doubles, two RBIs, two runs scored, and a walk. Berczek came around to score twice, while also collecting an RBI in the effort.
The Saints, the #4 seed to the Eagles #5 seed, raked the host for two quick runs in the top of the first frame. Calderon showed off his speed with an infield single, coming around to score on a Berczek single to left field. After Brandon Orbe drew a walk to push Berczek to second, a Brandon Padgett single saw the Saints jump out to the 2-0 lead.
Marymount used a leadoff single from Berczek to set the table in the third. Singles from Orbe and Padgett pushed Berczek across the dish, while a single from Karlis Graubics brought Orbe in to score for the 4-0 Saints edge.
Mary Washington, however, was about to voice its grand rebuttal. The Eagles started slowly, pushing three runs across in the third to inch within one, 4-3. The host plated the equalizer in the fourth on two hits before really settling in for damage in the fifth.
The Eagles erupted for five runs on three hits and a Marymount error to swipe the devastating 9-4 advantage. Another lone tally in the sixth saw the host reach double-digits, while two more runs in the seventh proved the ultimate insurance. UMW waltzed into the eighth inning with a 12-4 lead firmly in-tow.
A leadoff walk issued to Calderon gave the Saints some hope in the eighth, as the sophomore came around to score on a Ryan Blake single to centerfield. Marymount scrounged up another two runs in the ninth, but the two-out rally proved too little too late. The comeback bid fell short at 12-7.
Marymount returns to action on Thursday when it takes on Frostburg State at 12:30 p.m.
