Saints Tame Lions with Long Ball
Harrisburg, Pa. – The Marymount baseball squad used a complete game shutout from Dylan Gerdts, as well as some serious offensive firepower, to steamroll Penn State Harrisburg, 12-0. The Saints improve to 9-9 on the season and 5-5 in league play with the hearty victory.
The Saints offense came in bursts throughout the contest. Marymount posted multiple runs in four frames to seal the deal.
Brandon Orbe plated Ben Berczek in the second, courtesy of a deep sacrifice fly to left. Brandon Savage came in to score on a passed ball to give the Saints the 2-0 lead heading into the third.
Marymount came alive again in the fourth, using a Ryan Blake homerun – his team-leading fourth of the season – to extend the margin to three, 3-0. The Saints chipped away following the solo shot, eventually putting two runners on for Orbe. The sophomore stepped in and belted a three-run blast to up the ante to 6-0.
Lorenzo Calderon smacked a single to plate Jack Breheny just moments later for the 7-0 lead in the fourth.
Another Saints long ball came off the bat of Kaden Darrow to lead off the eighth, while singles from Berczek and Savage brought in another pair for Marymount.
The ninth inning saw the Saints add an exclamation point on their already stellar outing, using a double from Calderon to bring Breheny around. An error from the Lions defense would see Calderon come around to score as well, capping the offensive bout at 12-0.
Six different Saints recorded multi-hit performances, with four of them also collecting two runs scored. Ben Berczek paced the squad with a 3-for-4 day at the dish with two walks, while Orbe raked in a team-high four RBIs.
Gerdts fanned five in his first win of the season.
The decisive win comes almost two weeks after the Lions outlasted the Saints in a 14-11 duel. The six-hit shutout evens the series between the CAC foes.
Marymount returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Frostburg State for another CAC tilt. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
