#3 Salisbury Outlasts Saints in High-Stakes Duel

Box Score

Salisbury, Md. – Despite plating 12 runs against the nationally-ranked foe, the Marymount men's baseball team could not surpass the strong Salisbury squad.  The No. 3 Seagulls outlasted the Saints, 16-12, when all was said and done.  Marymount slips to 8-7 on the season and 4-3 in league play with the CAC loss.

The teams combined for an impressive 28 runs on 33 hits throughout the contest.

Salisbury opened the scoring fast and furiously on Wednesday afternoon, posting seven runs across the first frames to challenge the Saints with an overwhelming 7-0 margin.

Marymount, not even slightly daunted, responded with six runs on five hits and two Seagulls miscues in the third.  Carlos King led off the frame with a bunt single, moving to second on a single to right from Stephen Berczek.  An error from the Salisbury catcher saw the speedy King move up to third, while Berczek advanced to second after Lorenzo Calderon was hit by pitch.  Kaden Darrow bounced a routine ball to the SU second baseman, who greatly mishandled it, and allowed all Saints runners to advance safely – including both King and Berczek for the first MU runs of the day.

Calderon came in to score on a Ben Berczek single up the middle, while a three-run blast from Brandon Padgett – the first of his career – brought the Saints third-inning total to six – effectively cutting the margin to one, 7-6.

Salisbury chipped in a lone tally in the bottom of the same frame before the Saints went back to work in the fourth.  Marymount raked the Salisbury hurlers for three runs on three hits – including singles from Stephen Berczek, Ryan Blake, and Breheny.  Heading into the fifth, the Saints led the No. 3 Seagulls, 9-8.

Salisbury knotted the score in the bottom of the fifth with two hits and two unfortunate Saints errors.  The host would retake the lead in the sixth with two runs on two hits and another Marymount miscue, while adding another single strike in the seventh for the 14-9 advantage.

Marymount cut the deficit to four, 14-10, after Calderon walked and moved all the way around the bases on wild pitches.  Salisbury added its final two in the bottom of the same inning, using two left-side singles to up the ante to 16-10.

The Saints capped their lengthy bout with another pair in the ninth, courtesy of a Breheny down the left field line and another homerun from Padgett.  The comeback bid, however, would be halted there – 16-12.

Padgett paced the Marymount offense with his 2-for-5 performance, including two homeruns, five RBIs, and two runs scored.  Four other Saints recorded multi-hit games, while Calderon reached base all but once in the effort.

The Saints return to action on Saturday when they travel to Southern Virginia for another CAC showdown.  First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
