Box Score Arlington, Va. – The Marymount men's baseball squad found itself in quite the slugfest on Thursday afternoon, dropping a 14-11 decision to visiting Penn State Harrisburg at Burch Stadium. The Saints slip to 6-5 on the season and 2-2 in league play with the loss.
The Lions struck fast and furiously, posting five runs in their first two turns at the dish.
Marymount was able to rally back and knot the score in its half of the second, plating five runs on five hits. Jack Breheny continued his hot streak, sending a one-out double sharply down the left field line. After Roy Coates walked, Kaden Darrow followed with a fly-out to centerfield – deep enough for the speedy Breheny to advance to third base. Back-to-back singles from Brandon Padgett and Lorenzo Calderon saw three runs come across for the Saints, and the inning was still young. Stephen Berczek cleared the bases with a triple to the fence in right center, and crossed the plate himself on a double from Ryan Blake. Just like that, the score stood at 5-5 heading into the third inning.
The Saints shut out the Lions in the top of the third and went immediately back to work. Breheny led off the frame with his second double of the day, eventually advancing to third on a passed ball. A right-side groundout from Coates proved enough to plate the junior and start the three-run flood. Darrow sent a double to right center, Padgett walked, and the table was set for Calderon. The sophomore laced a single through the left side, plating Padgett easily. Darrow came in on a Ben Berczek single just moments later to extend the Marymount advantage to 8-5.
The fourth frame saw Penn State Harrisburg begin its slow rebuttal. The Lions used three hits and a pair of Marymount errors to push three runs across – effectively eclipsing the Saints lead. The visitors blanked the Marymount bats in the bottom of the fourth and then returned to the dish to hammer home the CAC victory.
The Lions used two hits and five free passes to haul in six runs in the fifth inning – jumping out to a massive 14-8 lead. Marymount countered with a lone tally in its turn before the bats fell silent for two full frames.
Marymount eventually found some rhythm in the bottom of the eighth, cutting the margin to 14-11 with two runs on one hit. Darrow sent a double to the wall in dead centerfield – just inches away from a round-tripper – to plate the pair and cap the scoring.
Calderon posted a 3-for-6 performance from the leadoff spot – collecting a double and three RBIs on the day. Ryan Blake followed suit with a 3-for-5 day at the dish, including a double and two RBIs. Breheny and Darrow registered two doubles apiece in the effort, while Berczek notched the day's only triple.
Marymount returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Wesley in a CAC doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. at Bishop O' Connell High School.
