Box Score Danville, Va. – Back-to-back three-run frames proved the Saints ultimate undoing on Thursday, as the Marymount baseball team fell to Averett, 11-4. The squad slips to 4-4 on the season with the nonconference loss.
Averett broke the scoreless repartee in its half of the third and never once looked back. The host jumped ahead with a squeeze bunt and extended that lead to 2-0 with a double down the left field line.
Marymount used a lead-off walk to Ryan Blake to kick-off a three-run fourth. Ben Berczek doubled to deep left center to plate Blake and then came around to score on a Brandon Orbe double to right center just moments later. Orbe advanced to third on a groundout and then crossed the dish on an error from the Cougars shortstop.
Faced with the one-run margin, 3-2, the host responded in equal force in the bottom of the fourth frame. A single to left center brought in the equalizer, while an untimely Saints error saw the Cougars swipe the 4-3 lead. A groundout allowed Averett to extend that margin to two, 5-3.
The host swiped another three runs in the ensuing frame – using two hits and another Saints miscue to pocket the 8-3 advantage heading into the sixth.
It was here that Marymount scrounged up its final tally. Orbe singled to left field to set the table and was subsequently lifted for punch runner Ryan Adamus. The speedster swiped second base before moving to third on a Lorenzo Calderon single to center. A throwing error from the Cougars catcher saw Adamus cross the dish and cut the deficit to 8-4.
The Averett bats remained hot heading into the bottom half of the sixth as the Cougars pushed another two runs across – effectively upping the ante to 10-4. Another lone tally in the eighth capped the scoring at 11-4.
Orbe finished the day with a 2-for-3 performance at the dish, while Calderon chipped in a 2-for-2 effort.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Frostburg State in a midweek CAC tilt. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
