Box Score Arlington, Va. – Using a clutch two-strike single in
the bottom of the ninth, junior Jack Breheny and the Marymount baseball team downed Gallaudet in walk-off fashion just moments before darkness fell on Wednesday afternoon. The Saints improve to 2-2 on the season with the win.
Gallaudet wasted no time jumping on the Saints in the first – chasing Marymount starter Collin Bazemore from the game after plating four runs in the opening frame.
With the comfortable 4-0 advantage in tow, the Bison continued at their torrid offensive pace, swiping another run in the second to up the advantage to an unanswered five.
While the next several innings proved scoreless, the Saints finally pieced together some offense in the sixth. With two outs on the board, head coach Frank Leoni called on freshman Chas Hinkle as a pinch hitter. The rookie singled
up the middle to bring up classmate Kaden Darrow, who in turn used his speed to beat out an infield single
. Max Burcham – another first-year Saint – stepped in with two on and two out and laced a two-RBI double to finally put Marymount on the board, 5-2.
After the Saints retired the Bison rather quickly in the top of the seventh, Marymount went back to work at the dish. Again, the Saints strung together their scoring bout with two outs in the book. Junior Ryan Blake dug into the box with the bases empty and smacked a triple – his first of two on the day – to deep centerfield. Sophomore Brandon Orbe drove Blake in just moments later with a sharp single
to shortstop – cutting the deficit to two, 5-3, in the process.
The eighth inning saw both teams go quietly, and the Bison – despite a double down the left field line – could not plate another run in the ninth.
Marymount found some good fortune in its final turn at the plate, as sophomore Lorenzo Calderon and freshman Stephen Berczek both earned free passes with one out. With the runners on first and second, Blake stepped up and unleashed an absolute missile to the deepest part of the park – an eerily similar shot to that just two innings before. The rookie registered his second triple of the contest with the laser, clearing the bases and knotting the score at 5-5.
With a lone runner at third and only one out, Gallaudet intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases for the easy force. It was then that Breheny stepped in and foiled the Bisons' plan, sending a single
out to right field to plate Blake and give the Saints the walk-off win.
Blake went 2-for-4 in the effort with two triples, two runs scored, two RBIs, and a walk. On the hill, sophomore Charlie DiGuilian recorded his first win of the season with the dramatic victory.
Marymount returns to action on Saturday for a nonconference tilt against Catholic at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
