Box Score Arlington, Va. – The comeback bid came too little, too late for Marymount University's baseball squad on Monday afternoon. The Saints strung together a late five-run surge in the ninth, but ultimately fell 10-9 to host Randolph-Macon. Marymount slips to 8-25 on the season with the nonconference loss.
The Saints coasted quietly through the first four innings, but used their half of the fifth to halve the 4-0 Yellow Jacket advantage. Ben Berczek led off the frame with a double to left, using a Randolph-Macon error and a Danny Russell single to cross the plate. Sean Gallagher, who had reached on the error earlier in the frame, used a pair of Saints ground-outs to eventually come around to score as well, bringing the Blue and White within two.
Not to be outdone, the Yellow Jackets rallied for three runs in their half of the fifth frame, regaining their original advantage and then some. Randolph-Macon added another lone strike in the sixth, upping its lead to 8-2.
Marymount continued to chip away with another two-run frame, using back-to-back base knocks from Danny Russell and Lorenzo Calderon to get the seventh inning underway. With two outs and urgency setting in, Karlis Graubics legged out a bunt single to load the bases for Bret Phillips. Phillips split the diamond with the fourth single of the inning, plating both Russell and Calderon and cutting the deficit to four.
Unfortunately, the Saints handy work would be undone in the next two frames, as the Yellow Jackets notched single tallies in their half of both the seventh and eighth innings.
With their backs against the wall, the Saints refused to let the 10-4 deficit blind them, firing off five runs on three extra-base hits in their final go-round. The Saints found themselves still down by six with two on and two out, but a free pass issued to Phillips loaded the bases for senior Macon Heikes. Heikes delivered a bases-clearing double, coming around to score himself only moments later as Brandon Orbe launched another two-bagger into left center. Berczek continued the offensive display with a triple to deep centerfield, plating Orbe and bringing the Saints within one. Unfortunately, that RBI-triple would cap the day's scoring.
Berczek ended with a 3-for-5 showing at the dish, while Orbe went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles. Russell also picked up a multi-hit game with his 2-for-4 day at the plate.
Marymount returns to the diamond on Wednesday when it hosts Averett in nonconference action. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
