Box Score 2 Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's baseball squad dropped a pair to Christopher Newport to open conference play on Saturday afternoon. The Saints dropped the opener 7-3 before falling 7-2 to the Captains in the nightcap. Marymount falls to 4-10 on the season and 0-2 in CAC action.
Freshman Anthony Perretti went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in the opener, while classmate Brandon Savage also posted a 2-for-4 showing.
The Saints fell behind after the first couple innings, facing a 3-0 deficit heading into the third. Savage tried to give the offense a boost with a single in the top of the first, but was thrown out when Bret Phillips grounded into a double play.
In the top of the third, the Marymount offense cut the deficit down to one. Gannon White led off the inning with a double down the left field line, advancing to third on a Lorenzo Calderon sacrifice bunt. Perretti then collected his first walk of the day to put runners on the corners for Savage. The freshman delivered his second single of the game to plate White. A Phillips ground-out brought Perretti across the plate – bringing the Saints within one.
The Captains stole a run back in the bottom of the third, and then pulled away even further in the fourth when they plated another pair. Christopher Newport would cap its scoring efforts in the sixth with a single tally.
The Saints added another score in the eighth as Perretti put himself into scoring position with a one-out single and subsequent stolen base. Phillips then stepped in and delivered a shot to left field, plating Perretti and the game's final run.
Brandon Orbe threw five innings for Marymount and struck out four, but falls to 2-3 on the year with the loss.
The nightcap saw Marymount struggle to string hits together. The Saints tallied five hits in the effort, each of which fell in different innings.
The Saints struck in the first inning without even recording a hit. Perretti drew a walk to lead off the game and advanced all the way to third on a failed pick-off attempt by Captains hurler Nick Santalucia. Orbe would plate Perretti with a sacrifice fly several batters later.
Christopher Newport struck with a pair of scores in the bottom of the first inning, negating the Saints initial tally. The Captains would go on to plate additional runs in the third, fifth, and seventh innings – ultimately challenging the Saints with a 7-1 deficit heading into the ninth.
The Saints did manage to stir up one more run in their final at-bat. Ben Berczek was hit by pitch to lead off the inning, but was erased after Karlis Graubics hit into a fielder's choice. Perretti then drew yet another walk to put runners on first and second for Macon Heikes. The senior smacked a single into left field, plating Perretti for the Saints final run.
Heikes was 2-for-3 with a walk in the nightcap, while Phillips went 2-for-4 with a double to close out his day. Jake Brown tossed six innings and struck out four for the Saints, but falls to 0-3 on the season.
Marymount returns to action on Monday when it travels to Washington & Lee for a non-conference match-up. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
