Box Score 2 Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's baseball team dropped a pair to visiting CAC rival St. Mary's on Monday afternoon, falling 4-3 in the opener before dropping the nightcap 9-6 to the Seahawks. The Saints slip to 4-21 on the year and 0-11 in conference action.
The opener, a one-run decision, saw the Saints lead for the majority of the contest. While the Seahawks posted lone tallies in both the second and fourth frames to procure a 2-0 advantage, Marymount came out in its half of the fourth undaunted.
Lorenzo Calderon led the Saints fourth off with a perfectly placed bunt single down the third baseline. Bret Phillips followed with a grounder to Seahawk second basemen Zach Rowe, but the throw to snipe Calderon at second was off the mark, allowing the runners to advance to second and third on the play. With one out, Macon Heikes executed a textbook squeeze bunt to bring Calderon in from third, while also reaching safely himself. Heikes proved quite the nuisance for the Seahawks on the bases, as he proceeded to set up a perfect first-and-third scenario only moments later. The senior third basemen broke for second, drawing a throw and allowing Phillips to score from third. When the St. Mary's defense realized Phillips was on the move, its throw was too late and too high for any play to be made, allowing the Saints to both even the score and advance Heikes to third. Marymount secured the 3-2 advantage when Heikes crossed the plate on a passed ball several pitches later.
It was not until the top of the ninth that the Seahawks stole back the lead and secured the victory, plating two runs on two hits to close out the game's scoring.
St. Mary's hurler Sam Beatty successfully kept the Marymount offense at bay, striking out 16 Saints to break the CAC single-game record for strikeouts.
The nightcap, on the other hand, saw an outpouring of offense from both squads. When the Seahawks posted their first score in the second, the Saints responded with a lone strike in their half of the same frame. St. Mary's added another run in the top of the fourth, but this time the Saints responded much more vehemently.
Marymount used a combination of St. Mary's miscues, free bases, and a big Phillips RBI-double to push its four runs across in the fourth. While the Seahawks added another lone tally in the fifth, the Saints held the 5-3 advantage until the visitors mounted an ardent revolt in the seventh.
The Seahawks strung four hits together – interlaced with several free passes – to push across an insurmountable five runs in their seventh frame.
Marymount did respond with a lone score in the bottom half of the seventh, but only for it to be negated in the top of the ninth by another Seahawk strike.
Phillips paced the Saints in the nightcap, going 4-for-5 at the dish in addition to several stellar defensive plays in right field. Sean Gallagher also went 3-for-4 in the effort, while both Corey Phillips and Gannon White chipped in two hits apiece.
The Saints return to action on Wednesday when they host CAC foe Wesley. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
