Box Score Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's baseball team hosted Washington College on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Shoremen 10-6 in ten innings. The Saints fall to 4-18 on the season with the loss.
Karlis Graubics went 2-for-4 in the effort, while Bret Phillips and Gannon White each turned in 2-for-5 performances.
The Shoremen got on the board in the third inning, using three hits to push across a pair of runs for the early advantage. After the visitors tacked on a third tally in the fifth, the Saints found the urgency to strike back.
The bottom of the sixth inning saw Marymount completely erase the Shoremen lead. Back-to-back free bases issued to Lorenzo Calderon and Graubics gave Marymount baserunners on first and second with only one out. Macon Heikes sent a lofty line drive out to right field for the second out, but the ball was struck well enough for Calderon to advance to third. Phillips then roped a single through the right side to plate Calderon and push Graubics to second base. After Brandon Orbe drew a walk to load the bases, White delivered quite an unconventional single. After fouling back almost ten pitches, White knocked the ball out into the infield, forcing Shoremen third basemen Garrett Richardello into a diving effort. Richardello came up just short and ended up tipping the ball across the diamond to second basemen Bryan Alexa. Alexa quickly fired the ball home in attempt to snipe Graubics at the plate, but the throw sailed wide and allowed Phillips to come around to score as well.
With the score knotted at 3-3, the Shoremen took action immediately to retake the lead in the seventh, using two hits to plate three runs in the next frame.
After plating a lone tally in the eighth, Marymount came back in the bottom of the ninth – with two outs – to knot the score at 6-6. Three singles in a row from Graubics, Heikes, and Phillips loaded the bases for Orbe. The clean-up hitter sent a hard bouncer to Shoremen shortstop Nick Marinelli, who got handcuffed and booted the ball into the outfield. The miscue allowed both Graubics and pinch-runner Jack Breheny to cross the plate and even the score.
The tenth inning, however, saw the Shoremen seal the deal. Using three hits and a Marymount error, Washington College was able to push four runs across in the top of the frame – creating an insurmountable deficit for the Blue and White.
Jason Freishtat takes the loss for the Saints after tossing just over three innings of relief. He falls to 0-2 on the year.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to CAC foe Penn State Harrisburg. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
