Saints Fall to #7 Salisbury

Box Score

Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's baseball squad dropped a CAC contest to visiting Salisbury on Friday afternoon, falling 21-5 to the #7 Sea Gulls.  With the loss, the Saints drop to 4-15 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

Boasting a .353 team batting average coming into Friday's match-up, the Salisbury offense took the early lead and never once looked back.  The Seagulls overpowered Marymount with their constant pressure, tallying runs in each of the first seven innings.

Down 2-0 heading into their half of the first, the Saints were able to push one run across to halve the deficit.  Karlis Graubics shot a one-out double down the left field line, ultimately coming around to score after back-to-back Marymount groundouts.

Using a five-run second inning, the Sea Gulls challenged the Saints with a 9-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the third inning.  Marymount chipped away at the Salisbury pitching, using a pair of hits to tally another lone run.  Beczek trotted down to first after taking a fastball to the head, and was subsequently moved to second by a Lorenzo Calderon sacrifice bunt.  Advancing to third on a Pete Grasso wild pitch, Berczek came around to score on a Macon Heikes single to center field.

The Salisbury offense proceeded to pepper the Saints with another six runs in the fifth and then four more in the sixth, testing Marymount with a 20-2 deficit.

The Saints responded with a pair in its half of the seventh, using a hit and a pair of Salisbury errors to chip away at the gap.  With Brady Larkin on second base, courtesy of an error and a passed ball, Brandon Orbe stepped in and delivered an RBI-double to the left center gap.  After another groundout moved Orbe to third base, a two-out error by the Salisbury defense would allow him to trot easily home.

Salisbury topped off its scoring with a lone run in the seventh, which would be negated by a Saints strike in the eighth.  A solo shot to deep left from Orbe – his second of the season – would ultimately cap the day's scoring efforts.

TJ Pietrandrea stymied the Salisbury offense after coming on in relief in the seventh, shutting out the Sea Gulls and surrendering only one hit over his three innings of work.

Orbe paced the Saints offense, turning in a 2-for-4 performance with a double, a homerun, and a pair of runs scored.

Tyler Roth takes the decision for the Saints after tossing just over three innings for the Blue and White.  Roth falls to 0-1 on the season with the effort.

Marymount returns to action on Saturday when it faces off against CAC rival Frostburg State.  The doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m. and will be played at Gallaudet University's Hoy Field.
