Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Catholic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's baseball squad hosted Catholic on Sunday afternoon, clinching the opener 5-4 before falling to the Cardinals 10-4 in the nightcap.  The Saints now sit at 3-6 on the season.

Leadoff man Jake Coleman wasted no time for the Saints in the opener, singling up the middle and then stealing 2nd base in the opening frame.  Brandon Orbe would plate Coleman with a triple down the right field line, giving the Saints an early 1-0 advantage.

The lone run held until the 4th inning, when several Marymount miscues allowed the Cardinals to plate the equalizer.

Unfazed, the Saints shot back in the bottom half of the frame, posting four runs to take their largest lead of the day.  Brandon Savage used a Catholic miscue to start the rally, while Roy Coates and Ben Berczek followed with a pair of singles through the right side.  With the bases loaded, Macon Heikes stepped up and delivered a bases-clearing double to the left center gap.  Anthony Perretti notched a single several batters later to plate what proved to be a big insurance run for the Saints.

The Cardinals mounted a small coup in the top of the 7th, using two walks and two hits to push three runs across the plate.  The Saints five-run tally ultimately proved insurmountable, however, and Marymount hurler Ben Berczek (1-0) completed the game for his first win of the season.

The nightcap saw Catholic jump out to the early lead, with the Cardinals posting runs in each of the first four frames.

Stymied by the Catholic pitching staff, the Saints offense could not find its rhythm until the 6th inning.  Marymount used base knocks from Jack Breheny, Brandon Orbe, and Corey Phillips to plate its first run of the contest.

The Saints rallied for three runs in their final frame as well, using a two-RBI triple from Breheny and an RBI single from Ryan Adamus to plate its last several runs.  Despite its momentum, Marymount's comeback bid would ultimately fall short.

Marymount returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Western Connecticut State.  First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
