Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Marymount University men's soccer team was unable to fend off the Cardinals of the Catholic University of America on Sunday afternoon, as three second-half goals from Catholic put the game out of reach.
The Saints (0-2) drew some tough luck at the end of the first half, as a red card forced MU to play down for the remainder of the contest. With extra space to operate, Catholic (2-0) showcased a knack for turning possession into offense with 20 shots and 14 corner kicks. Marymount mustered 8 shots and forced the Cardinals into two saves.
Catholic opened the scoring five minutes into the contest after a cross into the box allowed Nate Perrins to sneak the ball past MU's Ronald Clark. The Saints were undeterred and fought their way back into the contest.
The effort paid off in the 31st minute, as Matthew Correa netted the first marker of his career. Leonardo Torres and Derek Rivera combined with some quick passing in the build-up and were both credited with assists on Correa's effort.
After the halftime break, Marymount's defense stood tall down a man and kept Catholic at bay for nearly 20 minutes. The Cardinals took advantage of their man-advantage and grabbed three goals to put the game out of reach.
Marymount continues its road swing to start the season on Wednesday, September, 8, when the Saints head to Westminster, Maryland, for a tilt against McDaniel College. The kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
