Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. -- Two second-half goals for Hood College made the difference on Wednesday evening, as the Marymount University men's soccer team was edged by the Blazers, 2-1.
Marymount (4-5-1) was downright dominant on the ball all evening, which resulted in a 32-3 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Despite the Blue and White's strong performance in the midfield, Hood (6-2-1) managed to steal a pair of quick-strike goals to fluster MU.
The Saints jumped out to an early lead in the 24th minute. First-year sensation Leonardo Torres was the dangerman, as he netted his 11th goal of the season. The Manassas, Virginia, native collected a pass near the edge of the 18-yard box and dribbled past a pair of Blazers before calmly slotting the ball past Hood's netminder and into the back of the net.
Despite the Saints registering a few shots to open the second half, Hood knotted the score in the 60th minute. With the score tied, the Blazers managed to swing the momentum to their end of the pitch in the 62nd minute, as the visitors converted a corner kick opportunity into a goal.
MU continued to press on and fired 10 shots over the remainder of the contest. Junior Carlos Varona had the Saints' best chance in the 88th minute. A long ball into the box found the Miami, Florida, product, who put a strong glancing header on target. Unfortunately for MU, Hood's Braden Weinel got a glove on the shot and smothered the shot to seal the game's final score.
Torres paced the Saints' offense with eight shots on goal, while Matthew Correa finished the game with five shots. In goal, Ronald Clark made one save in 90 minutes of action.
Marymount hits the road for its next contest, when it treks north to Boston, Massachusetts, on Saturday, October 2, for a tilt against the University of Massachusetts – Boston. Kick-off against the Beacons is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
