Box Score 2 ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Marymount University men's volleyball team picked up the first two wins of its season on Saturday, taking down Elizabethtown College in a Continental Volleyball Conference doubleheader, 3-1 and 3-0.
Game One: Marymount 3, Elizabethtown 1
The Saints took the first set, 25-17, on the strength of a blistering .536 hitting percentage, producing 16 kills and only one error.
Junior Ervin Harrell put down six kills to lead the team, while sophomore Hayden Kerekes tallied four.
After dropping a close second set that required extra points, MU rebounded with a 25-19 third-set victory.
Marymount, again, found their groove with a .400 hitting percentage and only two errors. The Saints also notched four service aces, with junior Miles Olson hitting two.
Junior Raymond Tarasi notched five kills to lead the way, while Harrell added another four.
Marymount closed out the match in the fourth set, putting together another strong attack, with 10 kills and a .375 hitting percentage. The defense was on full display, as well, getting up for five blocks.
Tarasi and Harrell continued to pace the team, with three kills, each, in the set.
Junior Jason Perkins had his hand in every block of the set, tallying one solo, while pairing with Tarasi and sophomore Sava Topich on the others, respectively.
Harrell set a career-high in the match with 18 kills to lead the team, with Tarasi just behind with 15. Harrell and junior Chris Manganiello paced the defense with 10 digs, each, and Topich kept the offense flowing with 41 assists.
Game Two: Marymount 3, Elizabethtown 0
Marymount continued its hot hitting into the second match, posting a .500 hitting percentage in the first set. The team took a 25-16 victory for the match lead, as Tarasi and Harrell tallied four kills, each, to lead the Saints.
Tarasi finished the match with nine kills to lead the team, while Harrell and Olson, each, added seven.
Perkins put down the final kill to secure the set.
The second set proved to be closer, but the Saints were able to come out on top, 25-20, for a two-set lead. Tarasi put down another five kills to keep his big day going.
Olson tacked on four kills, and sophomore Grayson Andrews tallied two service aces.
Marymount was able to complete the sweep with a 25-17 third set to earn the second victory of the day. The Saints jumped out to an 11-5 lead, with the opening run capped by an Olson ace, and never looked back.
The team built the lead to 20-12, before capping the win.
Topich finished with 28 assists and eight digs to lead the team in each.
Marymount will return home to the Converse Family Fieldhouse for its next contest, hosting Randolph-Macon College on Tuesday, March 9. The first serve is set for 7:30 p.m.
