Saints pick up pair of wins in double-header over Blue Jays

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount University men's volleyball team swept Elizabethtown College in a Continental Volleyball Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Converse Family Fieldhouse.

Match 1: Marymount 3, Elizabethtown 0

Marymount turned in arguably its best offensive performance of the campaign against the Blue Jays with 39 kills and a season-best .378 attack percentage. Junior Raymond Tarasi led the barrage with team-leading 11 kills. Miles Olson added nine kills, while classmate Ervin Harrell floored nine and hit at a stellar .471 clip. Sophomore Grayson Andrews orchestrated the attack to the tune of 32 assists.

As high-powered as MU's offense was, the Saints' presence at the net was just as strong. Marymount totaled 10 blocks, compared to just two from Elizabethtown.

The opening frame was a back-and-forth affair, highlighted by the score being tied on seven occasions. Despite the Blue Jays' best efforts, MU held fast and used back-to-back kills from Olson and Harrell to claim the frame.

The second frame was all Marymount. The Saints' held Elizabethtown to an abysmal -.158 attack percentage. MU steadily built its lead, but a 5-0 run late in the set that was spurred on by the service of Hayden Kerekes allowed the Blue and White to cruise to a 25-11 win.

With a 2-0 advantage in hand, the Saints never took their foot off of the gas pedal in the final frame. The Saints floored 15 kills, while Elizabethtown mustered just nine. MU jumped all over the Blue Jays at the start of the stanza and built an 11-2 lead on the heels of a 4-0 run that was punctuated by an ace from Tarasi. Marymount never wavered from there and Harrell brought the match and set to a close at 25-19.

Match 2: Marymount 3, Elizabethtown 1

The Saints picked up where they left off in the first two sets of the second match, quickly taking a 2-0 lead. After the Blue Jays pulled out its only set victory on the day with a 28-26 win in the third, Marymount closed the match with a 25-21 victory in the fourth.

Olson put together another strong effort, leading the team with 13 kills while adding nine digs and two service aces. Harrell added 11 kills and a team-high 15 digs for the double-double. Andrews continued to keep the offense flowing with 31 assists, and sophomore Michael Collins helped anchor the defense with 13 digs.

Marymount took control early in the first set with an 11-5 lead. Olson notched his first ace to end the opening run. The Blue Jays would not get closer than four points on the way to a 25-18 Saints' win.

The Blue Jays kept the opening moments of the second set closer, as the Saints held a slight, 10-8, edge. However, a couple of kills by Olson helped spark a 10-3 run to break open the set. From there, the Saints rolled to a 25-13 win.

After another close battle to start the third, the Blue Jays took control and built an 18-12 lead. The Saints made a strong comeback with a 12-6 spurt, tying the score at 24-24. Olson's second ace capped the comeback, but the Blue Jays were able to regroup and force the fourth set.

The teams fought through a back-and-forth final set, with neither able to grab much of a lead. With a one-point lead, 21-20, late in the match, Marymount finished on a 4-2 run to finish out the victory.

The Saints will return to action on Monday, March 22 at Randolph-Macon College for a 7 p.m., matchup.
