Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Marymount University men's volleyball team bounced back in a big way on Wednesday evening with a straight-sets-victory over Eastern Mennonite University.
Marymount rolled on both sides of the net all evening, with a .355 attack percentage and a match-best 24 digs. Rookie Luke Morris led the charge with six kills, two aces, and two digs. Grayson Andrews orchestrated MU's with a match-high 24 assists. On the defensive side of the ball, Chris Manganiello tallied nine digs.
It was all MU in the opening set, as the Blue and White hit at a stellar .562 clip with 10 kills. After some back-and-forth early in the frame, MU pulled away with a 5-0 run that featured a pair of kills and a pair of aces from Miles Olson. Marymount rolled from there and took the set, 25-17.
EMU made the second set a tighter affair with 12 kills that matched the Saints' output. Marymount weathered the surge, however, and took a late 23-21 lead off of a kill from Zach Jayes. A block from Jayes and Caden Kelty and a miscue by the Monarchs gave MU a 25-21 win.
With a 2-0 lead, Marymount hung tough in a tight third frame to seal the victory. David Ward gave the home side a 12-11 edge midway through the set. MU bounced back with four consecutive points, highlighted by a kill from freshman Nick Mariel, to take the lead back at 18-15. The teams continued to trade blows from there, but the Saints used a service ace from Andrews to reach match point and a miscue from the Monarchs to claim the win.
Marymount returns to the court on Saturday, March 20, when the Saints welcome Elizabethtown College to Converse Family Fieldhouse for a pair of matches. The first contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
