Box Score 2 OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Marymount University women's volleyball squared off with a pair of tough opponents in Stevenson University and the University of Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon, but the Saints were unable to find a way past either opponent inside of Owings Mills Gymnasium.
Match One
Marymount started the day with a tilt against the host Mustangs, who managed to edge the Saints in four sets. While MU held the edge in kills, 50-46, Stevenson's 15 total blocks threw off the Blue and White's offensive rhythm.
The Saints showcased their firepower in the opening set with a match-high 18 kills in a 25-22 win. Stevenson took a slim three-point lead in the middle of the set, but MU responded with six unanswered points of their own. The Saints got kills from Maya Harris, Kaitlyn Doyle, Elissa Munsterman, and Sydney Sands during the run. While Stevenson managed to pull back within two late, a kill from Caylee Shelton brought the set to a close.
Unfortunately for the Blue and White, the Mustangs were not to be denied on their home court. Stevenson edged the Saints in the second frame and took the next two sets to seal the match.
A trio of Saints finished with double-digit kills, as Munsterman, Doyle, and Katee Stromberg all finished with 10 kills apiece. Munsterman registered a double-double with 14 digs. Sands added another double-double to her ledger with 29 assists and 10 digs. Natalie Garbalosa finished with a match-best 18 digs.
Match Two
The Saints went up against Lynchburg in the second match of the day and battled the Hornets in a five-set thriller. After Lynchburg took the first set, MU responded with back-to-back wins in the next two frames. Marymount floored 11 and 13 kills, in the second and third sets, respectively, to roll past the Hornets.
MU was unable to fend off Lynchburg in the fourth set, however, as the Hornets stole a 25-23 win. The Saints went blow for blow with Lynchburg early in the final frame and knotted the score at 6-6. The Hornets followed the tie with seven consecutive points to take a 13-6 lead. A kill from Jada Griffith halted the barrage, but it was too little, too late for the Saints as Lynchburg won, 15-7.
Doyle and Harris paced the Saints' offense with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Griffith finished one kill shy of a double-double with nine kills and 19 digs. Rookie Natalie Bialecki orchestrated the Saints' offense with a season-high 34 assists. Garbalosa and Shelton paced MU's defense with 27 and 24 digs, respectively.
Marymount returns home on Wednesday, October 6, for a 7:00 p.m. tilt against Gallaudet University.
