Box Score ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Marymount University men's volleyball team continued Continental Volleyball Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Elizabethtown College, rallying back for a four-set victory, 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-10, 25-20).
A slow start for the Saints had them trailing for much of the first set until a kill by sophomore Miles Olson late put MU in the lead for the first time since the first three points of the game, 19-18. Although the Blue Jays answered to retake the lead with a 4-0 stretch, the Saints kept the fight alive before dropping the first set, 25-22.
Another tight game in the second showed neither team gaining more than a two-point advantage until the midway mark of the set when the Saints separated themselves with an 8-1 run that forced Elizabethtown into a timeout. Following kills by senior Sam Safley and sophomore Raymond Tarasi, the 19-13 lead was more than enough for the Saints to even the match out at 1-1. A late push by the Jays got them within four, but a timeout by Marymount helped regroup and take the set, 25-20.
The second-game victory played a big momentum swing in the match, as the Saints came out swinging in the third set for eight kills at a .400 clip to roll to a 25-10 win. They gained some of the success on the other side of the net where Elizabethtown hit -.150 with seven attack errors. The separation started early with two kills by Safley sandwiching an attack error by the Jays. Eventually, the Saints hit a long stretch with a 9-2 run to take a double-digit advantage that shut down Elizabethtown the rest of the way.
In the final set, not much changed. Marymount came out swinging and took control early with an Olson service aces and a block by freshman Hayden Kerekes and Safley. Down the stretch, the Saints built up a double-digit advantage off another Safley kill and Olson ace, but the Jays hit a stretch of their own to get back within five at 23-18 to force a Marymount timeout.
Again, the break proved useful, as the Saints put the final touch on the match with kills by Olson and Kerekes to take the set, 25-20, and win the match.
Safley and Perkins led the offense for the day with 14 and 11 kills, respectively, while senior Joseph Zanelotti notched a double-double with a match-high 38 assists and a match-high 19 digs. Sophomore Chris Manganiello and freshman Grayson Andrews also had double-digit dig performances with 13 and 11, in that order.
The Saints return home for a three-match stand, opening with Kean University on Friday, February 14 in the Converse Family Fieldhouse. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
