Saints Split Home Tri-Match, Defeat PSU Altoona

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Marymount University men's volleyball returned home on Saturday for another tri-match, hosting Lancaster Bible College and Penn State University-Altoona in the Converse Family Fieldhouse. The Saints fell in the opening match against the Chargers before winning the second match against the Lions.

Match 1: Lancaster Bible 3, Marymount 1

A good matchup to start the day saw both teams reach at least 20 points in each of the four sets.

In the first set, the score swayed often all the way to a tied game at 21-21 when sophomore Jason Perkins layed down a kill. However, four-straight points by the Chargers gave them the first game, 25-21.

The second set had the Saints rallying for a 14-kill game with a .478 hitting percentage. Never trailing at any point in the set, MU earned the win with another Perkins' kill, 25-20.

The final two games played like the first set, where it was tight all the way to the end. Unfortunately, both worked in favor of LBC for the 3-1 final.

The offense had three Saints register double-digit kills led by senior Sam Safley with 13. He was joined by sophomore Raymond Tarasi and Perkins with 12 and 11, respectively. Senior Joseph Zanelotti tossed out 37 assists, while sophomore Ervin Harrell laid out for a match-high seven digs.

Match 2: Marymount 3, PSU Altoona 1

The Saints rallied back with a dominating three sets in the final match of the day against the Lions, earning the 3-1 (25-15, 20-25, 25-17, 25-13) victory.

Although they slipped in the second set, 25-20, the Saints controlled the match with throttling spreads in the other three sets. In the first, MU jumped out 5-0 off the start and never looked back. In the third set, two runs of five-straight points each pushed the Saints out to a 18-10 advantage, a lead the Lions couldn't overcome. And, in the fourth, a 9-2 start had MU rolling on the momentum all the way to a 25-13 win.

Safley, again, led the offense with 15 kills on a .370 kill percentage, while Tarasi added 11. Zanelotti sent out a match-high 35 assists, and sophomore Chris Manganiello grabbed double-digit digs with a match-high 11.

The Saints remain at home for a single match on Wednesday, January 29, hosting Loras College at 7 p.m.
