Box Score MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - The Marymount University men's volleyball team earned its fourth-straight win on Wednesday night, dropping Messiah College in four sets, 3-1 (24-26, 26-24, 25-19, 25-23).
The first two sets needed extra points to decide a victory, with each team taking one of the games. The first set went in favor of the Falcons, 26-24, although both teams landed 12 kills. However, a higher consistency of swings for Messiah, registering a .474 hitting percentage, proved the decider down the stretch. With a 24-23 advantage late, the Saints had an opportunity to take the first set and gain the early momentum. However, a service error was followed by a block, a kill, and a MU attack error maneuvered the Falcons to steal the set.
The second game played differently, on the fact that the Falcons landed 15 kills to the Saints 11, but Marymount came out with the extra-point victory, 26-24. The Saints posted a higher hitting percentage for the set, .375, while only giving up two attack errors and dropping in four service aces. The Falcons had five attack errors and five service errors in the set, including a service error and an attack error on the last two points of the set to give MU the game.
In the third set, the Saints found their flow with an impressive .867 hitting percentage with 13 kills and no attack errors to roll to a 25-19 win and a 2-1 advantage in the match.
With a lot of confidence, Marymount carried momentum into the fourth set where it came down to a locked in situation late. Although the Saints had a lead through much of the game, the Falcons battled back to take a 21-19 lead, looking to push the match to a deciding set.
Needing a timeout to regroup, Marymount came out for three-straight points with a kill by sophomore Miles Olson and back-to-back attack errors by Messiah to retake the lead, 22-21. A service error by the Saints had it knotted back up before they responded with two-straight kills by sophomore Raymond Tarasi to put the Saints at match point. The Falcons landed a kill to get closer, but an attack error sealed Messiah's fate.
Senior Sam Safley led the offense with a match-high 18 kills on a .500 hitting percentage. He was joined in double figures with Tarasi, who knocked down 15 kills on a .423. Senior Joseph Zanelotti dished out a match-high 45 assists for the night, while sophomore Chris Manganiello dove out for a match-high 11 digs.
The Saints will carry their win streak back home for another tri-match on Saturday, January 25, hosting Lancaster Bible College and Penn State University-Altoona in the Converse Family Fieldhouse. First match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
