SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Marymount University men's volleyball team wrapped up its trip to California on Saturday, splitting its final two matches at the Slug Slam, hosted by UC Santa Cruz. 

Match 1: Cal Lutheran 3, Marymount 0

Playing Cal Lutheran for the second time in four days, the Saints dropped a three-set match, 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-16).

For the match, Marymount landed more kills than the Kingsmen, 34-32, but only hit at a .070 clip. Leading the way again on the offensive side was senior Sam Safley with 10 kills on 28 attempts. Freshman Sava Topich saw his first playing time in at setter in the match, sending out a team-high 15 assists while senior Joseph Zanelotti added 11. 

Sophomore Chris Manganiello, at libero, dove out for a match-high 10 digs.

Match 2: Marymount 3, Lakeland 0

In the final match of the Slug Slam for the Saints, they came out firing with an impressive three-set sweep of Lakeland, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-21). The outing had MU hitting .473 with 42 kills and just seven attack errors. 

Leading that pace once against was 12 kills by Safley, knocking them down with a .611 kill percentage. The more intriguing statistical line came from Zanelotti, who not only sent out a match-high 25 assists, but also dumped over a career-best seven kills on a .500 percentage as a setter. 

The tournament was paced by the senior duo through the four matches, as Safley on the offensive side totaled 60 kills and Zanelotti sent out 117 assists for the weekend.

The Saints will now travel back to the East Coast for their first home matches of the season next Saturday, January 18. They'll host Geneva and Alvernia for a tri-match in the Converse Family Fieldhouse, with the first match set to begin at 12 p.m.
