Men's lacrosse drops close contest with Griffins in Atlantic East semifinals

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The No. 3-seeded Marymount University men's lacrosse team saw its season come to a close on Wednesday night in the Atlantic East Conference tournament semifinals, falling to No. 2-seeded Gwynedd Mercy University, 10-8.

The Griffins opened with the game's first goal 85 seconds in, but senior Sean Friedman answered just over two minutes later with an unassisted score to tie the game, 1-1.

The score remained tied, as the teams battled over the next several minutes, but the Griffins tallied two scores to hold a 3-1 lead after the first quarter.

Junior Michael Burns took a pass from sophomore Clark Akers and found the back of the net midway through the second quarter to cut the score to 3-2.

The teams traded goals through the second, with freshman Riley Scales converting an unassisted chance for the Saints, but Gwynedd Mercy took a 5-3 lead into halftime.

After only one shot in the first quarter, Marymount ripped off 15 in the second, trailing the Griffins slightly in shots, 17-16, at the break, while converting on 11-of-12 clears and leading in ground balls, 13-8.

The second half started with nearly nine minutes of scoreless action, before senior Matthew Ebert netted a man-down score at the 6:35 mark. Less than three minutes later, Scales netted his second on a pass from Burns to tie the score, 5-5.

However, the Griffins' Jacob Dzierzgowski responded 15 seconds later to give them a 6-5 lead heading into the fourth.

Gwynedd Mercy opened the final quarter on a 4-1 run, as Ebert scored with an assist from Friedman for the Saints. The run gave the Griffins a 10-6 lead with less than five minutes to play.

Akers notched two goals in the final minute of the game, as the Saints continued to battle in a comeback attempt, but the Griffins were able to hold on for the two-goal decision.

Akers, Scales, and Ebert each notched two goals to lead the team, while Akers added an assist for a team-high three points.

Senior Grey Clarkson played all 60 minutes in the cage for Marymount, making 14 saves.
