Saints use big first half to defeat Marywood in conference play, 8-7

Box Score

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Marymount University men's lacrosse team improved to 2-1 in Atlantic East Conference play on Saturday with an 8-7 victory on the road over Marywood University.

The Saints took control with four goals in the first quarter, striking first in the opening three minutes of the game.

Sophomore Jonah Mackiewicz found classmate Clark Akers for the 1-0 lead. Freshman Riley Scales doubled the advantage, before the Pacers found the back of the net to cut the lead to 2-1.

That was the only goal of the half the Saints' defense would allow, as Marymount closed the half on a 4-0 run.

Senior Sean Friedman assisted a goal by senior Matthew Ebert at the 2:59 mark of the first, before freshman Troy Tangolics found the cage with less than a minute left for a 4-1 lead at the break.

Tangolics tallied his second to start the second quarter, and freshman Kyle Johnson netted his first halfway through the frame, as the Saints took a 6-1 edge into halftime.

Despite trailing 22-17 in shots in the half, Marymount was in full control of the game, as senior Grey Clarkson had 10 saves in the first half to thwart the Pacer offense.

Marywood came out strong in the second half, scoring four-straight to start the third quarter.

With the Saints lead down to one, Tangolics completed his hat trick with 13 seconds left in the frame to bump the lead to 7-5.

After nearly seven scoreless minutes to start the fourth quarter, Marywood's Matt Mitarotonda tallied back-to-back scores to tie the game.

However, Akers would find the cage at the 5:22 mark on an unassisted tally to secure the win for the Saints.

Akers finished the game with two goals, while Tangolics led the way with three. Tangolics also led the team with three caused turnovers.

Clarkson finished the game with 12 saves, earning the win and playing all 60 minutes in the cage.

The Saints will return to action on Wednesday, April 10 at Immaculata University in a conference tilt; the opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m.
