Saints Tackle Bearcats With Overtime Game Winner

Box Score

LATROBE, Pa. - Fresh off a career day on Wednesday afternoon, sophomore Clark Akers added five more goals on Saturday afternoon including the game-winner, as the Marymount University men's lacrosse team earned a 15-14 overtime victory over Saint Vincent College.

The Saints built up a 10-6 lead in the first half, scoring five goals in each of the first two quarters. However, it was the Bearcats that got the scoring underway in the game, finding the back of the net twice before Marymount answered.

A little over four minutes in and trailing 2-0, Marymount rallied back with five-straight goals to take a lead that would hold until the fourth quarter. Four different players scored in the run, led by freshman Riley Scales with two.

With a 10-6 halftime lead, the Saints saw the lead cut in half with the Bearcats scoring two goals in the first five minutes of the restart. However, MU answered with back-to-back goals within three seconds of each other. Freshman Kyle Johnson caught a feed from senior Sean Friedman with 7:05 remaining in the third, and senior Christian Lutz followed quickly with a win on the faceoff and quick shot for the 12-8 advantage.

As the game moved into the fourth, SVU hit a stretch of three goals to open the final frame to draw the score even at 13-13 with 8:20 remaining. With the clock ticking down, Akers scored his fourth goal of the game to give MU the lead again, but the Bearcats answered with under a minute left on a man-up opportunity to send the game to extra time.

In the first overtime, the decision was made when Akers went unassisted less than two minutes in to seal the deal, 15-14.

Akers finished with seven points on five goals and two assists, while Scales and freshman Hunter Ralston each added a hat trick of goals. Lutz led the ground ball game with eight, as he won 16 faceoffs in the game.

On the defensive end, senior Dalton Smolens caused a game-high four turnovers while scooping up four ground balls. Senior Grey Clarkson protected between the pipes for the full game, making 14 saves.

The Saints return home for two games, starting off on Saturday, March 9 with Lebanon Valley College. Start time is set for 1 p.m., at Long Bridge Park.
