Attack Errors Plague No. 3 Saints in Loss at Stevenson

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Marymount men's volleyball team totaled a season-high 35 attack errors while Stevenson had 27 total blocks as the No. 3 Saints fell for just the fifth time this season, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 25-20 Wednesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The Saints (14-5), who swept the Mustangs at home back on January 19, suffered their first loss to Stevenson since 2016.

Marymount had a hitting percentage below .200 in three of the four sets while totaling at least seven attack errors in each.

Senior TJ Wiechecki had 21 kills and 11 digs to lead the Saints while sophomore Sam Safley added nine kills, four digs and two service aces. However, the two combined for 21 of the team's 35 attack errors. Junior Eric Wiles finished with eight kills and eight digs, but also had seven attack errors.

Meanwhile, Stevenson (12-5) hit .288 as a team led by 15 kills, eight blocks and seven digs from Jason Gardner.

The Saints jumped out to a 12-8 lead in the first set and led 16-12 before the Mustangs rallied to tie it at 16-16. With the scored tied at 19-19, Stevenson closed the set on a 6-1 run, led by two kills from Gardner and a service ace from Landon Shorts to take the five-point victory.

Marymount opened the second set with an 8-3 lead before extending it to 12-6. However, an 8-2 run by the Mustangs tied the set at 14-14. Six of Stevenson's eight points during the run came on errors by the Saints, including four-straight attack errors with the team holding a 14-10 advantage. The set featured four more ties with the last coming at 23-23 before a kill from Wiechecki and a service ace from Safley tied the match at one set apiece.

The Mustangs took a 4-1 advantage to start the third set with all four points coming on attack errors by the Saints. Stevenson stretched its least to 12-7 after three more Marymount errors. Trailing 15-12, that would be as close as the Saints would get as the Mustangs used a 5-1 run to take a 20-13 lead before closing the set with five of the final eight points, including four on two Marymount attack errors and two service errors.

The fourth set featured seven ties with neither leading by more than two points until the Saints used an 8-4 run to take an 18-14 lead. However, a 5-1 run by Stevenson tied the set for the last time at 19-19 before the hosts scored six of the final seven points to complete the upset.

Junior Remington Shahan totaled 11 kills and five digs while senior Erich Bratke added 47 assists and 11 digs.

Marymount has a nine-day layoff before returning to Verizon Sports Arena for the first time since February 3 when the Saints host Thiel in a CVC contest at 7 p.m., on Friday, March 16.
