Slow Start Leads Saints to 11-8 Road Loss at DMV Rival Catholic

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic outscored the Marymount men's lacrosse team 7-1 over the first and third quarters and the Saints could never pull even as they fell to crosstown rival Catholic on Wednesday at Cardinal Stadium, 11-8.

Marymount (1-3) has now dropped three-straight after opening the season with a 7-6 win against Methodist. However, all three losses have come by three goals or less.

Freshman Clark Akers led the team with four ponints on two goals and two assists. He has totaled nine of his team-high 10 points this season over the last two games while scoring five of his team-leading six goals. He is one of three Saints with six goals this season, including senior Nathan Beard who added two more Wednesday and senior Brent Sulhoff.

The Cardinals (3-2) scored the first four goals of the game, including three in the first 3:19. Freshman Jonah Mackiewicz got Marymount on the board with 2:48 remaining in the first quarter, but Catholic answered just eight seconds later to take a 5-1 lead after one.

The Saints opened the second quarter with on a 4-1 run to pull within one at 6-5 with 3:00 left after getting two goals apiece from Akers and Beard. However, that would be as close as Marymount would get.

The Cardinals extended their lead to 11-5 by scoring the game's next five goals while holding Marymount scoreless for a span of 12:41 until senior John Williamson scored his first goal of the season with 5:19 left in the fourth.

Sulhoff and junior Matthew Ebert both scored in the final two minutes off assists from Akers to provide the final margin.

Junior Grey Clarkson got his fourth start of the season in goal for the Saints, allowing seven goals while making just one save in the first half. Junior Patrick Ruleman played the final 30 minutes and made four saves while allowing four goals.

Marymount returns home to face St. Vincent on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m., at Long Bridge Park.
