No. 5 Saints Rebound With Top-5 Win Over No. 4 UC Santa Cruz

HARRISONBURG, Va. - A day after getting swept by second-year program Southern Virginia, the Marymount men's volleyball team rebounded with two wins on Saturday at Eastern Mennonite, including its second top-five win of the season as the No. 5 Saints swept No. 4 UC Santa Cruz, 25-20, 25-23, 25-23.

Marymount (13-4, 4-1 CVC) began the day with a 25-19, 17-25, 25-13, 26-24 win CVC West Division rival Eastern Mennonite.

Senior TJ Wiechecki led the way with 29 kills and .353 hitting percentage over the two matches and added 14 digs and six block assists. Sophomore Sam Safley had 20 kills and 14 digs while junior Eric Wiles totaled 18 kills. Senior Connor Choate had 20 digs on the day.

Wiechecki had 14 kills, five digs and three block assists in the opener against Eastern Mennonite (12-5, 5-2 CVC) while Safley totaled 10 kills and 10 digs. Senior Ben Steranka and junior Remington Shahan each finished with nine kills and a .750 hitting percentage. Steranka added one block solo and four block assists while Shahan had one block solo and two block assists.

Senior Erich Bratke totaled 43 assists while Choate had 10 digs.

The Saints led by as many as seven in the first set before the Royals led from start to finish in the second to tie the match at 1-1. Marymount jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third and stretch it to as many as 12 before battling back from a 6-2 deficit in the fourth and scoring the final two points to seal the match.

Against the Banana Slugs (19-4), Wiechecki added 15 kills, nine digs and three block assists while Safley and Wiles each had 10 kills and Choate added 10 digs.

Marymount scored the first four points of the first set and led by as many as 11 before scoring four of the final six points for the win. The Saints also never trailed in the second set, leading by as many as six before scoring two of the final three points on UC Santa Cruz errors. The third set featured eight ties, the last of which came at 20-20 before the Saints sealed the win on a kill by Steranka.

Marymount has a two-week break before returning to action on Friday, March 2 at Ramapo.
