Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – In a rematch of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament semifinals, the Marymount women's volleyball team came up short on the road at the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday night, dropping a 3-0 (21-25, 24-26, 12-25) decision to open league play.
Although the Saints had an early lead in the first set, it was erased by the Eagles who gained an advantage for much of the first half of the game. MU, however, battled back with a 9-1 run midway through the set, including back-to-back service aces by junior Emily Abramaitys and a solo block by sophomore Miranda Cooksey.
With a 21-20 lead, the Saints saw the slim lead slip away when the Eagles answered with five-straight points to take the set.
The second game saw several runs both ways, but the biggest was by the Saints later in the set. Following a MU timeout, the Saints put away nine-straight points to take a 21-17 lead, looking to draw the match even. The Eagles battled back, but a kill by Abramaitys forced UMW to take a timeout as they Saints sat at set point, 24-23.
The timeout played out useful for the Eagles, earning the last three points to take the extra-point second game.
The third and final set played in much of UMW's favor, as it never trailed throughout the game, eventually taking the 3-0 sweep in the CAC opener.
Freshman Mykael Johnson led the Saint offense with six kills, while junior Ashton Walker put down five to go with a .625 kill percentage. Freshman Maggie Viniard controlled the offense with 11 assists, while sophomore Theresa Buscemi dove out for a match-high 11 digs.
The women continue their six-game road trip on Saturday, September 30 for another CAC matchup, taking on No. 22 Christopher Newport University. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
