Slew of career bests lead Saints to two wins in home trimatch for 'Sets for Vets'

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ARLINGTON, Va. – Freshman Alexa Marcum led the way on the offensive end for the Marymount women's volleyball squad on Saturday afternoon, as the Saints grabbed two victories in their home trimatch against Shenandoah University and Goucher College.

The Saints took an the early match against the Hornets, 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 25-14, 25-8), before sweeping the Gophers in the final match, 3-0 (25-13, 28-26, 25-21).

Marcum, who posted a career-high 16 kills in the opening match against the Hornets, totaled 23 for the day while averaging a hitting percentage of roughly .300.

The opening match with Shenandoah played tight through the first two sets, before MU took command through the final two sets, including an impressive .400 hitting percentage as a squad in the fourth game with 10 kills. Much of that success came from Marcum's 16 kills and .317 hitting percentage and junior Emily Abramaitys' 10 kills. For the match, 11 different Saints put away at least one kill en route to 48 for the match.

Freshman Maggie Viniard dished out a career-high 29 assists of her 49 total for the afternoon in the Shenandoah victory, while sophomore Theresa Buscemi held strong on the defensive end with a season-high 25 digs, adding a team-high 14 in the later match as well.

Continuing her high performance at the net, sophomore Miranda Cooksey set a new career high with seven block assists against the Hornets before adding two more against the Gophers. She teamed up several times with freshman Mykael Johnson, who collected a career-high six block assists.

Every Saint saw time against the Gophers, as 18 Saints recorded some sort of helpful statistic in the sweep.

The three-match event was also labeled as the Saints' first 'Sets for Vets', a fundraising effort headed by junior Abramaitys and her parents, Jeff and Debbie. A great showing and support of fans from all three schools made the day enjoyable for all, as all the donations, raffle profits and sales of t-shirts and bake goods go to the Fisher House Foundation.

The women will look to continue the momentum next Wednesday, September 27, as they travel down to the University of Mary Washington for a rematch of the 2016 CAC Semifinal. First serve is slated for 7 p.m., in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
