NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The Marymount (Va.) University men's lacrosse team fell to Christopher Newport University in a Capital Athletic Conference clash on Saturday afternoon, 17-3. 

The Captains jumped ahead early in the game, finding the back of the net three times in the first quarter before the Saints answered. Just under the seven-minute mark, sophomore long-pole Hunter McGeeney ripped an unassisted goal, his second-straight game with a finish, to bring MU within two of CNU, 3-1. Christopher Newport snuck two more goals by prior to junior John Williamson connecting with junior Nathan Beard who found the back of the net with four minutes remaining in the quarter, 5-2. 

The Saints held the Captains to three goals in the second quarter, with Marymount striking again before the half. The Saints took advantage of a man-up situation, seeing junior Brent Sulhoff dish the ball to sophomore Josh McIvor for the finish. MU trailed 8-3 at the half, firing five shots on goal in addition to their three goals. 

To open the second half, sophomore Matthew Ebert and Beard went to work on the offensive end. Each player registered a shot on goal before the Captains were able to regain possession. Both squads remained scoreless for the first five minutes in the third before CNU broke the silence and pushed ahead by six, 9-3. The Captain offense proved to be too much in the third, finding the back of the net four more times before the clock expired, 13-3.

In the fourth, Marymount rattled off four more shots before falling to Christopher Newport at the end of regulation, 17-3. The defense also turned away 16 shots by the Captain offense, keeping them to just four goals in the fourth. 

The Saints will continue CAC play next Wednesday, March 22, traveling to top-ranked Salisbury University. First faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
