McCarthy, Bothwell post career nights; Saints fall short to Catholic

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University men's lacrosse team came up short in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night to Catholic University, 8-6, at Long Bridge Park.

Although the Cardinals pulled the opening faceoff, it was the Saints that found the back of the net first, seeing junior John Williamson dish off a pass to junior Nathan Beard for the 1-0 advantage less than two minutes into the contest.

It was a strong defensive front on both ends through much of the first quarter, as MU held Catholic off the board until the 3:42 mark when the Cardinals struck to take a 1-1 draw into the second 15-minute stretch.

Junior Dylan Watkins got the Saints rolling in the second period with an unassisted finish, but Catholic answered with three-straight goals to take a 4-2 advantage into the half.

On the restart, the Cardinals pushed out to their largest lead of the game with two goals in the third quarter to take a 6-2 advantage, but Marymount quickly erased the deficit with three finishes in the final two minutes to get back within one, 6-5. Senior Kellen McCarthy, working the 'x' behind the net, dished out three assists in the stretch, as he found sophomore Sean Friedman on two and junior Brent Sulhoff on the other.

In the final quarter, Catholic found the back of the net twice in the opening five minutes to push back out to a three-point lead. The Saints, however, continue to push offensively, but a strong defensive front by the Cardinals was enough to keep MU from erasing the deficit.

In the closing second, McCarthy found Sulhoff again from the left side of the net, as Sulhoff quickly caught the ball and shoved the ball behind his back for the finish into the right side with 15 seconds remaining.

McCarthy finished with a career- and game-high four assists to pace the Saint offense, while Friedman added two goals.

On the defensive side, sophomore Hunter McGeeney forced a game-high four turnovers, while junior captain Daniel Bothwell notched a career- and game-high seven ground balls. In the net, sophomore Grey Clarkson tending for the full 60 minutes, turning away 13 shots.

The Saints head on the road for the first time since the opening game of the season, traveling to St. Vincent College on Saturday, March 4. First faceoff is schedule for 1 p.m.
