ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount women's swimming team opened up the 2017-18 campaign in the win column, topping St. Mary's College of Maryland in a Capital Athletic Conference dual meet on Saturday afternoon in the Rose Bente Lee Center, 109-96.
Five different Saints grabbed top finishes in their respective finishes, paced by senior Morgan Alston, junior Taylor Plumley and sophomore Hayley Elizondo who each collected two first-place efforts.
Plumley, who earned a silver last winter at the CAC Championships, continued her distance freestyle strokes on Saturday, taking first in the 1000-yard free (11:28.74) and 500-yard free (5:40.68).
Elizondo picked up where she left off last year as well, grabbing top finishes in the 50-yard free and 100-yard breast. Her effort in the 50 free just missed entering the program's Top 10, clocking a time of 25:47. Her latter effort in the 100 breast was even more impressive, almost beating her current No. 2 mark in program history with a time of 1:09.26. She currently sits second with a time of 1:09.12.
Alston, who was the most decorated swimmer for the Saints at the CAC Championships last season with two gold medals and a silver, dove into her senior season with two first-place finishes in the 200-yard IM (2:20.21) and 100-yard butterfly (1:03.64).
Also heavily contributing to the point total for the Saints were sophomore Jessica Bricker and junior Claire Cassidy, each registering a victory for the afternoon. Bricker came through for first in the 100-yard free (58.33), while Cassidy did the same in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.92).
The Saints will look to continue the momentum into their second dual meet of the year next Saturday, November 4, as they head to reigning CAC Champion, University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
