Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. - Led by 17 kills and 20 digs from junior Caroline Hanson, the Marymount women's volleyball team held off a comeback attempt by Frostburg State as the Saints secured a spot in the 2017 CAC Volleyball Championship with a 25-15, 25-21, 19-25, 15-25, 15-11 victory Friday night at Verizon Sports Arena.
The Saints (13-12, 4-4 CAC) secured their spot in the conference tournament for the sixth-straight season and will be the sixth-seed where they will take on the third-seed in the first round next Tuesday, October 31.
Marymount's first round opponent won't be decided until the conclusion of the four remaining conference matches tomorrow evening. As of Friday night's results, the Saints could be traveling to either Southern Virginia, Mary Washington or Salisbury.
Hanson's 17 kills were one short of her career high set earlier this season at Virginia Wesleyan on September 2 while her 20 digs were three shy of her career high set in the CAC first round a year ago against St. Mary's (Md.) when she had 23. Tonight marked the third time in her career she has totaled at least 20 digs.
Freshman Mykael Johnson added 14 kills while freshman Alexa Marcum had 11. The trio of Hanson, Johnson and Marcum combined for 42 of the team's 64 kills.
Another freshman, Maggie Viniard, finished with 46 assists and 18 digs, both career highs. Just two nights ago, she had a career-high 42 assists while adding 13 digs in a three-set sweep at local rival Catholic.
Sophomore Theresa Buscemi finished with 16 digs and over her last five matches, has averaged 17.4 digs. Meanwhile, freshman Jasmine Roy added 13 digs.
The Saints combined for 33 kills and a .278 hitting percentage as they jumped out to a two-set lead, but were limited to just 21 kills and a .047 hitting percentage over the next two as the Bobcats (15-11, 3-5 CAC) rallied to tie the match and force a fifth and deciding set.
In the fifth, the trio of Hanson, Johnson and Marcum totaled seven of Marymount's 10 kills with Johnson picking up two over the final three points, including the match winner.
The Saints host a tri-match with Southern Virginia and Lebanon Valley on Saturday. Southern Virginia currently holds the third-seed in next week's CAC Volleyball Championship behind Christopher Newport and Mary Washington. Salisbury is currently the fourth-seed with York (Pa.) coming in at No. 5.
