Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - After missing the last four games due to injury, Marymount women's volleyball freshman Maggie Viniard returned to post a career-high 42 assists while adding 13 digs as the Saints swept crosstown rival Catholic in straight sets Wednesday at DuFour Center, 25-14, 25-20, 25-19.
Marymount (12-12) totaled 49 kills and hit .261 as it evened its record overall and on the road this season (6-6).
Viniard's 13 digs were just two shy of her career high and two shy of freshman Jasmine Roy who had a team and career-high 15.
Junior Caroline Hanson led the team with 15 kills and a .278 hitting percentage while adding nine digs and three service aces. Freshman Alexa Marcum had 12 kills, her fifth match with at least 10.
Catholic (16-17) had 107 attack attempts, only 12 less than the Saints, but totaled 17 errors, just one less than Marymount for a .084 hitting percentage. The Cardinals had 18 kills over the first two sets, but had 13 errors.
In the third set, Marymount had 18 kills compared to just eight for Catholic, but needed back-to-back kills by Hanson and Marcum to seal the win after Catholic had cut the lead to four.
The Saints will now face their two biggest matches of the season on consecutive days as they battle CAC foes Frostburg State and Southern Virginia to determine their fate for the CAC Volleyball Championship. Marymount is currently tied with Frostburg State for the sixth and final spot in the conference championship.
Game time between the Saints and Bobcats is at 7 p.m., on Friday inside Verizon Sports Arena.
