Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – In its second-straight double-overtime effort, the Marymount (Va.) University men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening at Randolph-Macon College.
The offensive intensity kicked off right at the whistle on both sides of the field, seeing both teams get off a great opportunity in the opening three minutes. Sophomore Brandon Orozco ripped a shot to start up the game, unfortunately getting blocked by the Yellow Jacket defense, before Macon's Bryan Lutz earned a header chance that soared over the crossbar.
The trend continued for much of the first half until the Saints broke the silence in the 24th minute. A ball sent in by Orozco found the foot of senior Ahmed El-manialawy, who with impressive footwork lifted the ball over the keeper for the 1-0 advantage and the second-straight game the Cairo, Egypt native has found the back of the net.
By the 37th minute, RMC took advantage of its opportunity. With a loose ball in the 18-yard box, Yellow Jacket Andrew Gyimesi collected it and found a hole past freshman goalkeeper John Valcicak.
Valcicak, who has tended the goal every minute this season, locked in for the remainder of regulation, as the game held at 1-1 and was sent to extra time. The freshman maintained his composure into overtime, seeing shots come at him right away; diving out for back-to-back saves in a minute stretch.
Marymount didn't see an opportunity in the first 10 minutes, but in the second overtime, the chance arrived in the first minute. Freshman Andi Garcia found a hole in the defense and send in a strong shot, but the lone attempt for either side in the final 10-minute stretch was pulled in by the Macon goalkeeper as the game held out for the 1-1 draw.
For the game, the Saints fired off 15 shots, with Orozco and El-manialawy leading the way with five and four attempts, respectively. A backline led by sophomores Tommy Orozco, Rodney Ngoh, Jose Ormeno, and Jesse Parada and freshman Michael Ku-Dipierto helped out Valcicak by holding the Yellow Jackets to just three shots on target.
The Saints will head home for their first home match on Friday, September 9, as they welcome Wisconsin Lutheran College to Long Bridge Park for a non-conference tilt. First touch is set for 6 p.m.
