Box Score FREDICKSBURG, Va.— The Marymount (Va.) University men's soccer team came up just short of a victory on Saturday afternoon against Averett University in the University of Mary Washington Soccer Classic, dropping a 2-1 decision late in double overtime.
The first half ended scoreless after an intense defensive battle between both teams. Marymount's persistent defense limited the Cougars' offense to two shot attempts. Freshman John Valcicak, who was in the goal for the Saints, stopped both attempts, notching two saves for the game.
On the offensive end, Marymount was able to fire off seven shots on goal, but Averett's goalie Austin Bramhall was able to save two and keep the Saints off the scoreboard. In the 44 minute, freshman Vicente Luna Rivera had a great opportunity to open up the scoring with a header, but was unable to find the back of the net.

Brandon Orozco. The Saints were able to keep a lead for eight minutes until Averett was able to get on the board on a goal by Matthew Munos. Neither team was able to strike again in regulation, forcing play into the first overtime.
Throughout the first extra 10 minutes, it was a stalemate with Marymount getting four shots on the goal and Averett with two. In the second overtime, Averett's Daniel Surely scored the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute.
The men will head to Randolph Macon College on Tuesday, September 6 for a non-conference matchup. First touch is set for 4:30 p.m.
