Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — The Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball team opened up Capital Athletic Conference play on the road Wednesday night, at St. Mary's College of Maryland. The Saints pulled out a four-set victory over the Seahawks, 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 26-24).
The Saint offense was active across the board, seeing three players register 10-plus kills. Senior
Cailyn Thomas paced the offense, registering 11 kills, followed by senior
Emileigh Rettig and sophomore
Ashton Walker, who each added 10 apiece. Walker was also able to maintain a .400 kill percentage throughout the match.
Junior Christine Tieman and sophomore Caroline Hanson each added 23 and 21 assists, respectively. On the defensive end, Thomas once again put a wall up at the net, notching six blocks, while senior Mallory Mitchell was there to scoop up a season-high 21 digs to lead the Saints on defense.
In the opening set, Hanson sparked a 4-0 run that gave the Saints a four-point advantage, 8-4. The Saints were able to maintain their lead and force a timeout by St. Mary's. The Seahawks rallied their way back into the set before taking the lead at 19-17. Following a Marymount timeout, the Saints came out swinging and pieced together a 4-0 run, led by Hanson with two kills. The quick momentum swing pushed MU through the rest of the set to take a one-set lead, 25-23.
The Saints fell behind early in set two, 7-3, before taking their first timeout. Both teams battled the remainder of the set point-for-point before the Saints fell short, 25-19.
Marymount took advantage of several Seahawk errors and added a kill of their own to take a three-point advantage early in the third set. St. Mary's inched its way back into the game to tie it up at nine all. The momentum shifted back-and-forth before Thomas put the ball away for the final point of the set with the Saints on top, 25-23, to reclaim the lead 2-1.
Set four proved to be another dual between both squads. The blue and white trailed by as any as five points, but pieced together a 10-5 run to tie the set at 20-20. The last three points of the match consisted of a kill by Thomas, followed by a Seahawk error, and the set ended on an ace by freshman Theresa Buscemi, allowing the Saints to prevail in extra points, 26-24.
The women will pick back up in October, as they head on the road for a tri-match in Lexington, Virginia at Washington and Lee University. The Saints will face off against Virginia Wesleyan College at 1:15 p.m., followed by Washington and Lee at 3:30 p.m., on Saturday, October 1.
