Box Score ARLINGTON, Va.— In a Capital Athletic Conference showdown Saturday evening, the Marymount (Va.) University women's soccer team held its own against the University of Mary Washington, unfortunately falling short 1-0 on a late second-half finish.
The matchup was also the women's Lace up for Pediatric Cancer game, as the women laced up with yellow shoestrings to show support for the fight against Pediatric Cancer.
The first half was a defensive stalemate between the Saints and Eagles; neither goalkeeper saw a lot of action as both defenses performed well. The Saints managed to fire off three different shots throughout the first 45 minutes, while junior Sydney Schultz had two incredible saves in her first-half efforts. Schultz was able to turn away four shots total in the half, after the backline led by sophomore Brooke Hillenbrand, senior Sarah Lloyd and freshmen Maddie Alexander and Gabby Cabrales held Mary Washington to just eight attempts.
The second half was also a defensive battle, with Schultz notching seven saves on 17 shots. However, in the 76nd minute, Mary Washington capitalized on a back-post opportunity for the lone goal of the game. A shot inside the 18-yard box by Eagles' Allye Reynolds was pushed away by Schultz, but the close-range save was deflected right into the direction of another Mary Washington player at the back post where Maryfay Jackson tapped in the game winner.
The Saints had several chances in the closing minutes, including great opportunities by freshman Karen Reyes and senior Chloe McAuliffe, but none were able to make it past the gloves of the Eagle keeper.
Schultz finished the game with a career-high 11 saves, while she took just her first lost in net of the season, moving to 3-1.
The women will head on the road to take on Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, September 28. First touch is set for 7 p.m.
