Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. — It was a career evening at Long Bridge Park for the Marymount (Va.) University women's soccer team, seeing two players notch new career marks while Head Coach Gayle Wilson registered her 50th coaching victory, as the Saints coasted to a 7-1 victory over Notre Dame of Maryland University. With the win, the women improve to 5-2 for the season.
The blue and white got an early jump in the match. Senior Kirsten Campbell, with some room in the right side of the 18-yard box, took a rip at the Notre Dame keeper, but she was able to push it wide. However, the deflected shot fell right into the lane for senior Chloe McAuliffe who was in perfect position to follow up and knock in her first goal of the game.
It didn't take more than a few minutes before the Saints put away another, again on the connection between Campbell and McAuliffe. This time, Campbell placed a perfect cross from the right corner into the middle of the box where McAuliffe collapsed in on it, connecting on the header and redirect into the back of the net.
Marymount didn't stop there, continuing to push the intensity on the offensive end. At the 17-minute mark, the Saints added another insurance goal to push a 3-0 advantage. Campbell fired another shot at the goal, again being deflected by the Gators' keeper. Similar to McAuliffe on the first goal, freshman Karen Reyes slid in to pick up her fourth goal of the season on the deflection and finish at the back post.
The Saints once again went on the attack and put in their fourth goal of the night in the 22nd minute. Campbell, seeing the field well all night, sent in another cross which found freshman Courtney Stephens, who finished with a header.
The Gators were finally able to answer with a goal by Meghan Conner with 15 minutes left in the first half, but that's the last time they'd put points on the board.
MU continued to put pressure on the Gators' defense, adding its fifth goal right before the break. Freshman Makayla Dulac, with some room on the left side, took advantage of the keeper being out of position, sending in a deep 25-yard shot up and over the goalie's gloves for her first collegiate goal and a 5-1 lead at the half.
The second half allowed the Saints to continue building their lead. McAuliffe capped off her first collegiate hat trick in the 83rd minute on an unassisted finish in the 18-yard box, followed by Stephens taking a pass from McAuliffe a minute later for the seventh and final goal of the game.
Junior Sydney Schultz spent the full 90 minutes in the cage, turning away four shots to earn her third win of the season.
With the win, Wilson earned her 50th coaching victory while at the helm of the Saints' program. Additionally, McAuliffe set a career mark with her first collegiate hat trick and seven points, while Campbell sent out a career-high four assists.
The women return home to open up Capital Athletic Conference play on Saturday, September 24, as they host the University of Mary Washington. First touch is set for 5 p.m., at Long Bridge Park.
