Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – Two second-half goals by Methodist University topped the Marymount (Va.) University men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon, dropping its first match since the beginning of September with a 2-0 decision.
A strong defensive effort through the first 45 minutes saw the game go into the break scoreless, as both teams managed to get off just one shot on target apiece. The Monarchs ripped off the first one in the 13th minute, but it was nothing freshman goalkeeper John Valcicak couldn't turn away.
Several minutes later, the Saints sent in their opportunity. Awarded a free kick right outside of the 18-yard box, senior Ahmed El-manialawy blasted the 20-yard attempt to the left side of the net past the wall of defenders, but was unfortunately pulled in by the Monarch keeper.
The silence was broken in the second half, as Methodist found the back of the net in the 62nd minute off a cross to the back post for a quick touch in. The Saints continued to battle, looking for the equalizer in the closing minutes, but the Monarchs struck one more time in the 84th minute to seal up the 2-0 decision.
The Saints will continue their home stand on Wednesday night, September 21, as they host Gettysburg College at Long Bridge Park. First touch is set for 7:30 p.m.
