Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – In a comeback effort, the Marymount (Va.) University men's soccer team put away its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating Mount Aloysius College, 4-3, after second-half goals by sophomores Brandon Orozco and Marc Mendoza.
In a matchup of plenty of offensive power, the Saints found themselves trailing, 3-2, entering the final 45 minutes. It took until the 56th minute, but Marymount found the equalizer on a connection between sophomore Andre Ferguson and Orozco.
Pushing the ball up the field, Ferguson in the middle of the field sent over the top of the defense a perfect pass to Orozco who needed just one touch to send a shot into the back of the net to draw the score at 3-3.
With both teams battling for the game winner, the Saints found the best opportunity in the 73rd minute. Awarded a corner kick on the right side, freshman Michael Ku-Dipietro sent in a floater to the middle of the 18-yard box. In the mix of both teams, the ball remained loose for the taking. Crashing in from the top of the box was Mendoza, who swiftly put a hard shot on target, getting it past the outstretched arms of Mountie goalkeeper Kyle Lachance for the game winner and his second career goal.
The first half has played out the same way as every game so far this season for the Saints, scoring the initial goal of the match. Sophomore Mynor Lopez, with the ball in the right corner, sent in a good cross into the middle of the box where it met the foot of Orozco for the quick finish and 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
The Mounties answered with two straight in the middle part of the first half, before senior Ahmed El-manialawy found freshman Vicente Luna Rivera for the equalizer in the 31st minute, the first of his collegiate career.
Before the break, Mount Aloysius found the back of the net one more time, but that would be the last for the remainder of the match.
Orozco finished with four points in the game off two goals to lead the Saints' offense.
Freshman John Valcicak earned his first collegiate win between the pipes, registering three saves in his 90 minutes of play.
The men remain at home to take on Shenandoah University on Wednesday, September 14. First touch is set for 7 p.m., at Long Bridge Park.
