Stephens' late-game heroics gives Saints third-straight win

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University women's soccer team continued its hot streak on Saturday afternoon, making it three in a row with a comeback victory over Randolph College at Long Bridge Park after late heroics by senior Lyndsie Iwata and freshman Courtney Stephens

The first half saw plenty of action, including three attempts on target for the Saints (3-1), but none would make it past the gloves of WildCat goalkeeper Stephanie Quirk.

By the 32nd minute, Randolph capitalized on one of its few opportunities in the first 45 minutes. A free kick lined up on the right side of the field was sent over the head of the Saint defense where it met the foot of Randolph's Sam Hablas who pushed the ball quickly ahead to teammate Patricia Garrett. With a one-on-one opportunity against senior goalkeeper April Westmark, Garrett went low with the attempt just out of the reach of the diving Saint for the 1-0 advantage at the half.

As the day continued to get hotter on turf, the Saints had to dig deep to overcome the deficit. In the 69th minute, the hard fought battle paid off. On the right side of the 18-yard box, freshman Gretel Bonilla sent in a clean look in front of the net where Iwata slashed in for the quick boot into the right side of the net for the 1-1 game.

The scoreboard continued to tick down, with the looks of overtime being possible. But in the 86th minute, the Saints put away the game winner off the precision of Stephens. Being awarded a free kick in the middle of the field, roughly 25 yards out from goal, Stephens lined up for the potential game winner. This situation played quite similar for the freshman a week ago, when she put away her first collegiate goal in the Saints' opening game of the season, placing a 35-yard free kick over the hands of the keeper.

On Saturday afternoon, she did it again, sending a low liner past the wall of WildCats and into the right side of the net to put the game away.

Through the past three games, the Saints defense has given up just one goal while the offense has put up 10 goals. The backline has held strong in front of Westmark and junior Sydney Schultz led by senior Sarah Lloyd, sophomore Brooke Hillenbrand and freshmen Gabby Cabrales and Maddie Alexander

Schultz relieved Westmark in the net for the final 45 minutes of the contest, earning her second win of the season. Both keepers made one save apiece in their respective halves.

The women head on the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, September 14, as they take on No. 25 McDaniel College. First touch is set for 4 p.m., in the Green Terror Soccer Complex.
