Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Marymount (Va.) University men's lacrosse team traveled over to the bay for a Capital Athletic Conference battle against St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday afternoon, falling behind early to drop a 13-7 matchup.
The Seahawks jumped out early in the contest while holding the Saints off the board until the third quarter. Through a 31-minute stretch, St. Mary's built up a 10-0 advantage before Marymount looked to make a run in the third quarter.
Coming out of the half, the Seahawks notched a quick goal in the initial minute off the restart, but through the remainder of the quarter the Saints outscored St. Mary's, 4-1. Junior Nick Hohman got things underway for the blue and white with an unassisted finish, not long before freshmen Bryan Mcmanus and Matthew Ebert connected at the 11:22 mark. Two minutes later, senior Matt Justice capitalized on a man-up opportunity to cut the deficit to seven. The Seahawks answered to cut the run, but the duo of sophomore Nathan Beard and senior Maxwell Johnson found the back of the net with a minute remaining in the quarter to carry the momentum into the final 15 minutes.
Johnson opened the final quarter with his second finish of the game to continue pushing the Saints closer to the Seahawks, but the deficit was too much to overcome down the stretch. St. Mary's sandwiched two Saints' finishes from the stick of Beard and junior Kellen McCarthy to take the 13-7 decision.
Freshman Grey Clarkson set a new mark in the goal, notching a career- and game-high 16 saves. On the defensive end, the Saints caused nine total Seahawk turnovers led by freshman John Kailunas III with four.
The men remain on the road, as they travel to Dover, Delaware on Wednesday, April 13 for another conference tilt at Wesley College. First faceoff is slated for 7 p.m.
