Keane, Saints tame Wolverines for league victory

Box Score

DOVER, Del. – Senior captain Stephanie Keane guided a blistering offensive performance by the Marymount (Va.) University women's lacrosse team to coast past Wesley College, 16-4, in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night.

Keane was one of 10 total Saints to find the back of the net in the contest, slinging a game-high four shots past Wesley goalkeeper Savannah Clough while dishing out two assists for a game-high six points. With her four-goal game, she has now totaled 74 for her career, moving her into 12th in program history.

While on the topic of program records, sophomore captain Abby Wescott tallied a five-point game behind two goals and three assists on Wednesday night to move her two-year point total to 107, 11th in program history, while dishing out 55 assists, good enough for third most in the record book.

The Saints set the tone early for a half that would see MU bolster an 8-0 score, seeing junior Natalie Tinkham take in the first finish of the game just 30 seconds after the initial draw control.

The scoring continued soon after when senior Sadaf Najafzadeh earned a free-position attempt on the left side of the eight-meter fan, sliding down the middle for a high finish and a 2-0 lead by the 27:14 mark.

Wescott found freshman Jessica Crew for her first of three for the game over a minute later on a man-up opportunity before Crew sent out her lone assist to Keane 30 seconds after her goal for the quick 4-0 advantage.

The trio of Crew, Keane and Wescott all tacked on another goal throughout the remainder of the half, pushing a 7-0 lead, while sophomore defender Liah Agouras used her speed on the transition to cap off the eight-goal first half with her fourth finish of the season.

In the second half, the Wolverines would manage to score four times, but the Saints still rattled off another eight goals to sit comfortably in the lead throughout. While Crew and Wescott added another goal apiece and Keane notched two more, Marymount saw scoring from several others in the 30-minute stretch, kicked off by the initial goal off the restart by freshman Bridgette Stacom

Stacom's finish to start the second half was followed up by Wesley's first goal before junior Michelle Casteel eliminated any momentum with her lone goal of the game at the 26:07 mark.

Freshman Kelly Campbell tacked on an unassisted finish later in the half, while freshman Bridget Odom rounded out the scoring for the Saints with 3:23 remaining in the contest on a free-position shot.

For the game, the Saints' offense fired off 33 shots, 29 of which were on target. In the midfield, Marymount held the edge on draws, controlling 13 to the Wolverines' nine.  On the defensive end, the Saints caused 13 of the 22 Wesley turnovers led by Agouras with a team-high three.

Freshman Holly Reik notched her ninth win in the net, posting a 66.7 save percentage off an eight-save game.

The women will return home for Senior Day on Saturday, April 9, as they ready for No. 15 Christopher Newport University for another conference battle. First draw is set for 2 p.m., at Long Bridge Park.
