Saints clench fourth-straight CVC victory with win over Cairn

Box Score

LANGHORNE, Pa.—The Marymount (Va.) University men's volleyball squad ousted Cairn University in a Continental Volleyball Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon, in a three-set sweep (25-17, 25-21, 25-18). The Saints move to 13-6 overall this season, 6-2 in the CVC.

Marymount quickly jumped on Cairn after taking an early 3-0 lead. The Saints continued to build their lead later in the set after completing a 5-0 run, forcing the Highlanders to take their first timeout. Sophomore Graham Clark sparked the run with a kill and was quickly followed up by sophomore Jordan Pawlicki who added an ace. The run continued after a kill from freshman Eric Wiles and another ace from Pawlicki. The timeout wasn't enough to stop the Saints, as they maintained their lead throughout the remainder of set one. A kill from sophomore Carson Caudell set MU up for set point, and the Saints took advantage of a Highlander error to win, 25-17.

Set two proved to be a tougher battle as both teams traded points until the Saints were able to piece together a 7-1 run, to gain some breathing room. After tying the game at 10 with a kill from sophomore Connor Choate, Marymount's offense got hot. Sophomore TJ Wiechecki racked up three kills during the run, followed by Choate who added two kills and an ace for the Saints. The run led to a 17-11 advantage for MU, before CU could answer. Cairn battled back on a last-ditch effort to tie the game, 21-21, but the Saints kept their composure and finished on top, 25-21.

The Saints continued trading points with the Highlanders in set three, forcing four ties and three lead changes early on. Marymount forced Cairn to take a timeout following a 3-0 run. Wiechecki started the run with a kill and was followed up by an ace from sophomore Tomasz Ksiazkiewicz and another kill from Wiechecki to take the 14-12 lead. The Saints finished the set and match on an impressive run to win, 25-18.

The offense was well spread out amongst the Saints. Wiechecki and Clark led the offense with nine kills a piece, both hitting .500 for the match. Pawlicki led the Saints in assists after racking up 19, followed by sophomore Erich Bratke who posted 14. Sophomore Albert Johansson led the Saints on the defensive end, diving out for seven digs.

The men's squad will be back in action on Friday, March 11 at home in the Verizon Sports Arena. They will host a tri-match with Stevens Institute of Technology and Lancaster Bible College. The Saints will square off against Stevens at 10 a.m., followed by LBC at 2 p.m.
