Saints notch CVC victory over EMU, drop four-set match to LC

ARLINGTON, Va.—The Marymount (Va.) University men's volleyball squad hosted Continental Volleyball Conference-opponent Eastern Mennonite University and Division II Limestone College on Saturday afternoon for its second-straight tri-match in two days.

Marymount vs. Eastern Mennonite

The Saints swept Eastern Mennonite in a CVC matchup, 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-13) and move to 7-2 in the CVC.

Marymount went straight to work taking a 1-0 lead after a kill from sophomore TJ Wiechecki. The Saints continued to dominate on offense, piecing together a 4-0 run to take a 7-2 lead. Sophomore Graham Clark added two kills during the run and sophomore Jordan Pawlicki added an ace for the Saints. The Royals were unable to catch the Saints, as Wiechecki finished the set with a kill, 25-19.

The Saints took another 1-0 lead early on, after the Royals committed an error. Set two was an intense battle seeing several ties and lead changes throughout. Wiechecki made the difference in the set, after racking up a set-high five kills. Marymount as a team also put up a wall on the defensive end, posting seven blocks. Sophomore Albert Johansson set up Wiechecki for the set-point kill to win 25-20.

In set three, the Saints trailed at first, but turned the heat on and pieced together a 4-0 run to tie the game at five all. The Royals were forced to take a timeout after the Saints took a 12-7 lead. Near the end of the set, the Saints rallied for a 5-0 run, forcing another timeout by EMU and taking a 10-point advantage. Junior Tomasz Ksiazkiewicz, sophomore Eric Wiles and Clark all added kills during the run. The set ended, 25-13, after back-to-back kills by Clark and sophomore Connor Choate

Wiechecki led the Saints offense with a match-high 11 kills followed by Clark with nine. Sophomore Erich Bratke and Pawlicki kept the offense moving with 21 and 18 assists, respectively. Johannson led the defense with a match-high nine digs.

Marymount vs. Limestone

Marymount dropped a four-set match to Division II Limestone, 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-21) and move to 15-8 overall this season.

MU trailed 1-0 but quickly answered with a kill from Choate. Marymount pieced together several 2-0 runs to topple Limestone in set one. MU took advantage of several Limestone errors and Ksiazkiewicz and Clark each added two kills during these runs. Clark ended the set with a kill followed by an ace to finish on top, 25-23.

Marymount jumped out on top following a 3-0 run to take the 7-4 lead and forced a timeout from Limestone. LC came out of the timeout on a 4-0 run of its own to the tie the game at eight. Limestone continued to pull away as the set went on, and eventually won, 25-20, after taking advantage of two Marymount errors.

LC took an early lead in set three after racking up an 8-1 run to take a 9-4 lead. Marymount attempted to slow down their momentum with a timeout after trailing by three. Bratke set up Wiechecki to end Limestone's run to cut the deficit to four. Limestone's offense continued rolling and proved to be too much for Marymount as they finished the set, 25-16.

The Saints continued to trail most of set four until making a late run. MU pieced together a 4-0 run after back-to-back aces from Ksiazkiewicz and a kill from Wiechecki. The run tied the game at 19-19 but Limestone went on to win 25-21 on an ace by Kevin Rocklein. 

A match-high 14 kills by Wieckecki led Marymount on offense, followed by Clark who added 12. Pawlicki and Bratke continued to run the offense and racked up 15 and 27 assists, respectively. Johannson registered a match-high 15 digs to lead Marymount on defense. 

The men will host CVC opponent Thiel College on Friday, March 18 at 7 p.m., in the Verizon Sports Arena.
