Men's lacrosse drops 9-6 road match with Lions

Box Score

READING, Pa. – The Marymount (Va.) University men's lacrosse team traveled up to Pennsylvania on Saturday for a non-conference matchup with Albright College, grabbing two fourth-quarter goals on a comeback attempt but fell short in the effort, 9-6.

It was a close-knit battle all the way to the midway mark of the third quarter when the Lions hit a four-goal run into the final 15 minutes that the Saints couldn't overcome.

Albright started up the scoring in the contest, as the first quarter was back and forth with a 2-2 score through the first 15 minutes. Freshman Matthew Ebert collected his first goal of two for the day less than two minutes after the Lions' initial finish to draw it back even.

Albright answered to retake the lead several minutes later until a cross check by the Lions gave the blue and white a man-up opportunity, which senior Maxwell Johnson capitalized on, breaking down the defense for an unassisted finish to draw the score even at 2-2 through the first quarter of play.

The Saints took over the advantage in the opening minutes of the second quarter, seeing Ebert connect with Johnson for his second of the day to push the 3-2 lead. Before the break, the Lions found the back of net one more time to send the score all tied up into the half.

The restart kicked off with two goals in two offensive positions with Albright scoring in the opening 15 seconds followed by Johnson's third and final goal of the game a minute later.

For the next 16 minutes into the fourth quarter, the Lions tacked on a four-goal run to push an 8-4 advantage with 12:30 remaining in regulation. The Saints, looking to make a late comeback, found the back of the net two more times off an Ebert finish and freshman Bryan Mcmanus adding his contribution with an unassisted goal to draw Marymount within two. The effort came up short though, as the Lions cut off the run with another finish to take the 9-6 decision.

Johnson paced the offense with three goals, while Ebert added a goal and two assists for three points. Senior Mike Kempel tended the cage for the full 60 minutes, making seven saves.

The men will now prepare for their spring break trip to Clearwater, Florida in a week. The Saints will open with Cazenovia College on Tuesday, March 8 before capping off the trip with DeSales University on Thursday, March 10.
